Introduction

"The course is an overview of our understanding of the universe, from the immediate vicinity of our planet Earth within the Solar System to the largest scales of physical reality. Topics included are: solar system, the laws governing the motion of the planets and the surface properties of some planets, the life history and properties of stars, stellar evolution and stellar remnants, properties and evolution of galaxies, black holes and cosmology. Practical sessions will involve an investigation of observable celestial phenomena, including celestial coordinates, the diurnal motions of the stars, the orbital motions of the planets, the phases of the Moon, and eclipses. This will involve the use of interactive computer software. Some nighttime observing is included on a voluntary basis."
