"The course will introduce and examine literature and debates vis-à-vis gender and development in the Middle East and North Africa. Key topics will include: the history of the gender and development approach; post-colonial approaches and critiques of mainstream gender an development; gendered experiences of voluntary and forced migration in the region; and Islamic feminism. A range of MENA case-studies will be explored throughout the course with particular emphasis on Morocco and the Maghreb.
Women are often not counted by national governments or international agencies because they are not perceived as « engaged » directly in the economic activities of the family and the nation. The readings in this course will explore the ways in which development happens and the role women have in it. Special emphasis will be given to the situation in the Arab world, North Africa, and specifically Morocco. The course interrogates notions – often taken for granted - of development and requires students to look beneath the surface of development theories and practices.
This course discusses development from its beginnings following World War II with a specific focus on the theoretical orientations that regard issues of gender and the inclusion of women."
