"The objective of the course is to explore the evolution of African politics since independence and how they help African countries meet the challenges of development in the contemporary period. Starting with the legacy of colonialism and its enduring impact, the course will cover post-independence ideologies and strategies in the context of globalization, regional integration and inter-African relations. Domestic politics will be assessed in terms of their effectiveness in helping achieve the legitimate aspirations of the African people. Special attention will be given to the political economy of development in the context of the evolution of development theories in 1970s (modernization, dependency…) and the return of neoliberalism and its increasingly dominant position. The development performance of African political systems will be assessed in light of the empirical evidence provided by the experiences of African countries."
