Introduction

The course is designed as an introduction to the politics of the contemporary Middle East. It aims at developing a basic understanding of the origins, structure and functioning of the political systems of the region. The course also explores a selection of themes in contemporary Middle Eastern Politics, including democratization, political Islam, civil-military relations, the Arab-Israeli question, and the question of the role of ethnicity and nationalism.
